PICTURES FROM VIRGINIA, CIVIL WAR HISTORIC SITES

A.)  FREDERICKSBURG
Atop Lee's Hill, Fredericksburg VA. This was Robert E.
Lee's command post during the battle. Lee was knocked
to the ground when a Parrott rifle like the one behind me
exploded. Two artillerymen were killed. Fortunately for the
South, Lee escaped serious injury.
Pictured with me are my wife, Maria, and my mother, Frances, now deceased. Mom had a
great love for history that she passed on to me soon as I was big enough to heft a copy of
The
Red Badge of Courage.
Same location: With me in this pic are Maria and my father, Andrew F. Massey, Jr.
The stone wall at Fredericksburg. Confederate troops stood below
ground level and mowed down Federal troops as they advanced.
This photo gives an idea of the advantage enjoyed by the
Confederates. They stood behind the rocks. The Federals advanced
in full view. A Federal soldier's boots would have been on level with
the grass pictured here.

This stone marks the exact spot where General Thomas J.
Jackson fell, a victim of friendly fire.

C.)  THE CHANDLER HOUSE
The wounded Stonewall Jackson was
brought to this house.
Jackson's deathbed.
Though doctors amputated Jackson's arm in an attempt to save him, pneumonia set in. A devout
Presbyterian, he died on a Sunday. His last words: "Let us pass over the river and rest in the
shade of the trees."
